How much shade does a pergola actually give?
Standard rafter spacing gives roughly 40 to 60 percent shade depending on the sun angle, and more if you add closer-spaced purlins, a shade sail or a louvered roof.
Will a pergola keep rain off?
An open pergola will not. A louvered roof system or a solid polycarbonate top will. If rain protection matters most, a covered porch is usually the better answer.
Cedar or composite?
Cedar looks the best and costs less upfront, but needs re-staining every few years. Composite and aluminium cost more initially and then essentially cost nothing.
Do pergolas need a permit?
Freestanding pergolas often do not, but attached structures usually do. We check your local requirement before we start.
